I am BreAna. I am originally from Jamaica, New York but now reside in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. I am mostly self taught and began my journey with photography several years ago. In the early 1980's, I started dabbling in 35mm film photography when my children were small. They were by far my favorite subjects, but then I also grew to love taking pictures of anything I could. Family, friends, vacations, holidays, birds, animals, etc. You name it, I would take a picture of it. It got to the point where I had rolls and rolls of undeveloped film. Because of that, I got discouraged and slowed down from most of it and began to lose interest, with the exception of photographing my children.
Out of everything I have ever photographed, the one thing that I wish I never had the chance to, was the aftermath and destruction of the February 22-23 F3 tornado outbreak which hit Kissimmee, Florida in 1998. One of the tornadoes came through Lakeside, the subdivision in which I was living and destroyed several homes. My family was one of the lucky ones and our home was untouched. I still feel that someone was looking out for us. What was once a beautiful neighborhood, afterward resembled a war zone. These storms ended up taking 42 lives and injuring 260 people. Although I don't have the photographs any longer (I have no idea what happened to them), the images and memories will be with me forever.
In 2005, I got the bug again and I decided to buy myself a little digital point and shoot camera to take some pictures on vacation. A friend saw the photos and asked me if I would take some photos at her wedding. I hesitantly agreed to do it and she loved them. She showed them around which led to a few more wedding requests. I really enjoyed doing this, so I started upgrading my equipment as more weddings, events and concerts came along. Over the years, my passion for "shooting" (No, not with a gun, but with my Canon DSLR's) has continued to grow and has brought me great pleasure. One of my favorite pastimes is to grab my camera and go to one of the many area parks and do a little wildlife and nature photography. While it is only minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city, it almost seems like another world there.
I am an Assistant Organizer and Creative Advisory Board member of the Florida Center for Creative Photography (FLCCP.org). Through this organization, I have had the great opportunity to join other photographers in diverse groups by leading and attending photowalks, as well as attending classes, workshops and casual get togethers where we discuss different aspects of photography. I find photographers are a different breed. Kind, intelligent and always wanting to give more than they receive.
I am blessed to have found my passion, it has greatly expanded my horizons and puts a smile on my face everyday.
Best Regards
BreAna
